Principles & Philosophy

Regarding our vision…

We’re all passionate about something. One could say exhibit designers and developers are passionate about everything. We find the sharing and crafting of stories and experiences immensely captivating and thrive on helping our clients translate their stories into dynamic 3D narratives. We do this work because we believe in preserving heritage, an informed public, educated and entertained, and in the protection and celebration of our greater communal need for storytelling.

Regarding our clients…

Excellent client relationships yield excellent outcomes. Studio Tectonic prides itself on close-knit collaborative relationships and starts building a long lasting rapport on day one. Naturally, the more we get to know our clients the better the resulting project. Studio Tectonic makes the creative process fun, approachable and navigable. We pride ourselves on our flexibility — in collaboration — in cooperation. Our clients are dedicated, passionate institutions and our team holds their vision dearly. With this, we feel most successful when our work results in our client collaborators expressing the best of who they are through our creativity and commitment.

Regarding our public…

We do our work for the public. For our children, our communities, our present and future generations. They are the ultimate client to every project — as without them we’re just making pretty places. Like a library with all its book on its shelves, our work, without the public is without life. We craft our exhibits to be used, to be embraced and as living entities.

We highly value both formal and informal evaluation tools, and all other means of including our visitor’s input throughout the development and life of the places we produce. Like the unexamined life, an exhibition without reflection and testing sits without critical analysis.

We strive to strike the right balance of back and forth with the public — in both directions. Visitors want to tell their stories, and we love hearing them, including them, and utilizing their stories to shape our work.

Regarding our project approach…

First we listen to our clients and help refine what about the project is important to the institution, to the stakeholders, and to the visitors. From there we nurture the collective concepts to formulate a narrative ideology, apply the pragmatics (schedules, budgets, milestones, etc.) and continue to closely collaborate with clients to achieve and transcend the original articulated outcome. We are creative, optimistic, and realistic. These traits enable us to cleverly negotiate obstacles, maintain the project’s overall vision, and ensure fluidity throughout the design process & lifespan of the project. Our team comes with a fun and pleasure-seeking attitude and an innate enthusiasm and commitment for what we do. We’re like a dog on a bone for quality and integrity, yet we hold it all with a light touch.

Regarding our mission…

We do this work for people we’ll never meet. People we’ll never know. All kinds of people of all stripes. We believe in connecting people to what matters. To the broad human experience and universal truths, but through detailed and specific engagements. By keeping the end-user in mind and regularly reminding ourselves of the public good of the work, we hold a bird’s eye and worm’s eye view on what we do and how it lives on long after we call it “done”.
